There I was, barreling down the highway with furniture piled in the back of a pick up truck. All I needed was Granny and I could have passed for a member of the Beverly Hillbillies fan club.
Put together these clues: a) it was August, b) my youngest had graduated from H.S. in June, and c) she passed me with a wave because she didn’t want to go that slow. Yep, you guessed it. I was delivering furnishings for the Freshman college dorm.
Honestly, I didn’t mind because my sister, Becky, was with me in the truck. We rarely get to talk for two hours without interruption. It was great to have that oasis carved out for sister time.
That was the day I asked Becky THE question, “If you could do one thing KNOWING that you could not fail, what would that be?”
Her answer was that she wanted to coach women. She shared that several neat women had been mentors for her at crucial times in her life. Then it was my turn. I said, “I would be a professional organizer.” Then I laughed as I thought to myself, Yeah, right! , and put that thought out of my mind.
Meanwhile I had an empty nest and decided to take classes to learn real estate appraising. Great timing, huh? The odd thing was, as I took all the classes that were required, I was learning the legal, accounting, and business practices – all the basics necessary to start a business.
Next, another daughter shared that she had to write a business plan for her college business course. I learned that my oldest daughter was considering a change of careers. Both girls would benefit from joint planning for her start-up Professional Organizing service!
As I read the finished product, the light went on. I could do this! I truly enjoy helping people. The start up costs were minimal. I had been organizing for more than twenty years through raising four children, moving over 10 times, chairing volunteer programs, and leading women’s Bible studies. I now knew the basics of business management. There were no more excuses.
I believe God has a sense of humor. I am still walking through the joys and disappointments of owning my own business. To get paid for doing what I love – priceless!
What would you choose if you could not fail? Do you dare to step out and do it? What is holding you back? Who could help you with the push you need to get started? What if there were not more excuses?
I hope you get to do what you love. Other people benefit when you share your special gifts.
