Perhaps you are under the impression that all organizers do is help people pitch junk, shuffle papers, and make the place look neat. Yes, we do help our clients downsize possessions, develop filing systems, and create adequate and eye-pleasing storage.
However, the results we provide have a much deeper impact on lives both physically and emotionally.
That is why my job is so satisfying! These are a few of the life-changing results I see as an organizer.
- Give them hope for the future; they don’t have to stay stuck in chaos and defeat.
- Set them free from the burden of clutter (of things, their past, negative emotions) so they are able to move on.
- Let them know they are capable of maintaining order with the system that matches their personal bent.
- Affirm their competence on the job when they can find info quickly, get started on today’s projects, and reach for tomorrow’s opportunities.
- Empower them to take back control of life and their environment, one area at a time.
- Make them feel valued for the unique individual they are, not based on some preconceived notion of what they should be or do.
- Boost their self confidence knowing he/she will remember appointments, be on time, and have what is needed at that moment.
- Allow them to experience being refreshed daily in a calm retreat at the end of a fast-paced day.
- Enable them to accept less than perfection, while striving for “good enough.”
- Give them a safe and healthy environment so they can thrive.
- Acknowledge with them the truth that we each fail at times, but that each mistake is a new chance to start over.
OK, I said 10, but the ideas just kept coming.
Kendall Summerhawk, a marketing coach whose ideas have helped me tremendously as a small business owner, says that when she gets stuck in her business, she cleans out her closet. Whether it is the renewed order, spending time surrounded by clothes she loves, or concentrating on one thing totally unrelated to her pressure point – she is able to return to the problem with a fresh perspective. Of course, as an organizer I cheer her choice of distraction. <grin>
The point is, when we clear a path in one area of our life, the positive feelings ripple outward and encourage us to repeat the process for even greater success. That is what I get to help my clients see and experience. Love it!
