Is your media center a huge piece of furniture or a 1”x6” board stretched over two concrete blocks? Either way, you can save time and frustration by creating a system of orderly storage for your media collection.
First sort by category into piles: extra equipment, CD’s, DVD’s, Video games. If you see items that make you ask, “What was I thinking?” do not hesitate to put them in the round file (trash can.) Your ability to find what you use and love is more valuable than the dollars spent on a dud. Put records and VHS tapes in a box to deal with another session.
Store all CD’s in the same area within arm’s reach of the CD player, using a shelf, drawer or container that is designated for CD’s only. For a bedroom boombox, the drawer in your nightstand will hold 50-75 CD’s. If desired sort CD’s by owner or put all holiday/karaoke CD’s together.
Store all DVD’s together within arm’s reach of the DVD player. A low bookshelf will work. I like decorative CD/DVD bins found at most local department stores in the home goods section. I use these decorative boxes from Target – small holds 25 CD’s, large holds 50 Cd’s or 30 DVD’s.
Store all video games and equipment in a covered container. Dust is the #1 enemy of electronics. Use a box that fits your décor. If interest wanes in a particular game, take it to a resale shop and trade for another before all value is gone.
Hopefully, some of the media collection was weeded out. The remaining media categories are contained in one area. Now, finally, you can find the CD you were looking for!
Stay tuned for ideas on those vinyl things and movie oldies.
